A New Zealand homewares retailer implemented Digital Picking earlier this year with the aim to streamline fulfilment, improve picking productivity and reduce manual processes.
Digital Picking is an extension of Viare’s Order Management and Fulfilment system and is easily configured and compatible with a range of handheld devices.
Digital picking is able to drive massive efficiencies for picking. Visual and audible cues for incorrect and successful scans give instant validation that the correct item has been picked. Moreover, they are faster and easier to use than manual picklists and reduce cost. Learn more here.
The Change has gone down exceptionally well, “Initially we expected some of the long-time users to struggle with such a major change to the process but immediately were all on board with all the new benefits and streamlined processes, and new users were finding it easier to use digital picking than learn the old paper based method.”
The introduction of Digital picking removed human error from the picking process, resulting in quicker dispatch times and less work in double picking and the recovery of mis-picked goods to the shop floor.
“Digital picking is more time and resource-effective. It also allows pickers to instantly know that they have the correct item (instead of picking the wrong thing and finding this out later when allocating).”
The use of Digital Picking has also been an environmental win for this retailer, with a reduction of an estimated 3 million pieces of paper annually, which had been used throughout the now redundant paper picklist process.
“Digital picking is a lot quicker and saves a lot of paper compared to creating and printing lists. It’s great that you can click the photo to make it bigger and have the image in colour compared to black and white on paper.”
The implementation of Digital Picking has also increased staff engagement, with those outside the fulfilment team happy to help. This is likely due to how easy the solution is to learn and use, team members can start picking with very little training.
“With digital picking, it's almost impossible to make a mistake. The application is so simple to use and has drastically reduced the time in the entire process.”
